Retelling Canadian Art History…

The Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, Concordia University, is dedicated to innovative research about the history of art in Canada: its diverse communities, creative spaces and astonishing richness. In 2016, three members of the Institute will be telling these stories in a series of public lectures, curated by Institute director Martha Langford for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The 2016 series will introduce audiences to different facets of art making in Canada. Johanne Sloan begins by asking about the places and spaces of art – about contemporary art cities, one of which is Montreal. Sherry Farrell Racette takes us back in time to Indigenous communities – to the splendour and meaning of Métis textile works, which she evokes in use. Anne Whitelaw introduces us to yet another network of Canadian art communities formed by women volunteers – those enlightened supporters of modern art and artists in Canada. These three lectures bring fresh insights to the telling of Canadian art history.

Johanne Sloan, professor of art history, Concordia University

It was once a radical gesture when artists chose to show their work outside of museums or galleries. Today that is no longer the case, as multiple organizations and institutions have arisen to facilitate such projects; however, one important offshoot of this anti-institutional movement has been that more and more contemporary artists now engage critically with the urban environment. This lecture considers artworks and art practices undertaken in several Canadian cities that propose a quest for urban knowledge, imaginative cartographies, and an interdisciplinary approach to urban aesthetics. The works in question might take the form of films, photographs, performances, installations, interventions or digital constructions. In such ways, artists in Montreal, Vancouver, Windsor and Dawson City actively contribute to the cultural life of that city, even while cities themselves are recognized to be unpredictable conglomerations of cultural energies. It is also possible to ask: does the identity of each city result in a distinctive urban artworld?

United States, Robert Fenton, Randy Barbato, 2016, 108 min., English

Narrated by Mapplethorpe himself, with the help of his older sister and youngest brother, the film presents a portrait of the artist, who dedicated his life not only to becoming an artist, but also to making his chosen medium, photography, respected and valued as fine art.

Judith Benhamou, French journalist, exhibition curator and writer specializing in art and the art market

Artist Robert Mapplethorpe’s work was a study in contrasts, a reflection of his personality. He died of AIDS at the age of forty-two, a hero and martyr of an identity reclaimed, a sexuality heretofore hidden, and the originator of a new neoclassical genre of photography. In the chaos of New York in the 1970s and 1980s, he rendered a meticulously constructed world in black and white, drawn to perfection.

MEXICO | ORIGINAL VERSION: SPANISH | SUBTITLES: FRENCH

Passionately in love and eager to live together as a couple, Rita and Mateo move out of the city and take refuge in the apparent tranquility of Mateo’s deceased father’s country house. Like every new relationship, it is all sex and fun in the beginning until Rita’s desire to become a mother, Mateo’s fear of commitment and an unexpected visit by Alexis, Mateo’s seductive cousin, come between them. Rita and Mateo’s differences surface, testing the shaky foundation their relationship is built on.

In conjunction with the exhibition Focus: Perfection presenting the works of American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, the Be/Loved installation celebrates the diversity of sexual orientation and gender expression – the united colours of our society. Meet volunteers from GRIS-Montreal, who will be happy to answer any questions you might have about homosexuality and bisexuality.

For more than twenty years, volunteers from GRIS-Montreal (Groupe de Recherche et d’Intervention Sociale) have been visiting schools in the Greater Montreal Area to demystify homosexuality and bisexuality by talking about what it’s like being gay, lesbian or bisexual, and by answering students’ questions.
