Duration : 2h 41

USA, 2005, Carroll Moore, 30 min., English

Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmartre are renowned for paintings and posters inspired by the edgy spectacle of Paris’s infamous quarter in the late nineteenth century. Using works by the artist and his colleagues, rare archival footage and sound recordings, period photographs, and interviews with contemporary scholars, this film traces the relationship between the aristocratic painter and Montmartre’s avant-garde culture.

USA, 1960, Walter Lang, 131 min., English

In Montmartre, 1896, the can-can is the forbidden dance. But Simone still performs it night after night at her club. She and her girls use their feminine wiles to charm the authorities into looking the other way. But the young, ambitious judge Philippe Forrestier is determined to make her honour the letter of the law.

Canada, Vincent Audet-Nadeau, 2013, 94 min., French, Cree and English with French subtitles

“Suuhk! Suuhk!” (or “Go! Go!”) is what the James Bay Cree call out to cheer on their kids when they’re zooming around the skating rink! Over Easter weekend, thousands of Cree meet up in Val-d’Or for their minor hockey tournament, one of the largest in Canada. Documentary filmmaker Vincent Audet-Nadeau uses the tournament as a pretext to lead us through the twists and turns of the identity issues currently facing the Cree nation and to introduce us to today’s Cree.

Prof. Massimo Osanna, general director of the Superintendency of Pompeii

Every day, Pompeii proves itself to be a living, breathing archaeological site, where the preservation and restoration of antiquities is practised with Italian expertise and artistry recognized the world over. From May 24 until the end of the year, the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal presents an enriching lecture series revealing Italy’s comprehensive knowledge of Roman civilization and its historical, archaeological and documentary heritage, as well as the latest on major restoration and recovery projects uncovering new areas of Pompeii.

Professor Osanna spearheads the ongoing Great Pompeii Project, an enormous undertaking in which teams of architects, skilled workers, restorers and archaeologists use the latest technologies to manage ongoing research, conservation, restoration and infrastructure at Pompeii.

The lecture will be preceded by a screening of the short film Pompéi émotion éternelle by Pappi Corsicato (Italy, 2015, 10 min.)
