Prof. Tommaso Gnoli, Associate Professor in Ancient (Roman) History at the University of Bologna

Identities and identity-making self-representations are a core topic in nowadays scholarly activity, as also the skilled work by Andrade, Syrian Identity in the Greco-Roman World (2013) testifies. Moreover, the present international situation specifically in the case of the new Syrian diaspora towards Europe makes this theme of the identity of people in a diaspora particularly appealing.

On the basis of a case study regarding 10 Syrian people who died in Iulia Concordia (Veneto, Italy) in the first decades of the fifth century AD, it is possible to reassess the concept of Syrian “Identity” and to find new approaches that have a heuristic value in the study of identities in the ancient world in general. Moreover, it is also possible to show how the bureaucracy in Late Antiquity shaped the self-perception of Syrian identity.

Drama directed by Andrzej Zulawski, with Sabine Azéma, Jean-François Balmer and Jonathan Genet

FRANCE, PORTUGAL | ORIGINAL VERSION: FRENCH | SUBTITLES: ENGLISH

Witold has just failed his law exams, and Fuchs has recently quit his job at a Parisian fashion label. Both are going to spend a few days in the countryside, and choose to stay at a so-called family inn. They are welcomed by a sparrow, hanged in the forest by a string. In the guesthouse, there is a servant – who has a strange, twisted mouth – and a young house mistress whom Witold falls obsessively in love with. She’s already married to a decent young man, but is she decent herself? The third hanging, a cat, is the work of Witold. Why? Could the next one be human?

Just how stimulating concerts in the gardens and coffeehouses of Baroque Germany could have been transpires in J.S. Bach’s delicious and humorous miniature quasi opera, his Coffee Cantata. Like today, such events were sociable occasions to enjoy musical works so fresh their ink wasn’t yet dry, or else foreign compositions sometimes arranged for the forces at hand. So savour the moment!

In conjunction with the exhibition Focus: Perfection presenting the works of American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, the Be/Loved installation celebrates the diversity of sexual orientation and gender expression – the united colours of our society. Meet volunteers from GRIS-Montreal, who will be happy to answer any questions you might have about homosexuality and bisexuality.

For more than twenty years, volunteers from GRIS-Montreal (Groupe de Recherche et d’Intervention Sociale) have been visiting schools in the Greater Montreal Area to demystify homosexuality and bisexuality by talking about what it’s like being gay, lesbian or bisexual, and by answering students’ questions.

Works by Bach, Benda and Vivaldi

Just how stimulating concerts in the gardens and coffeehouses of Baroque Germany could have been transpires in J.S. Bach’s delicious and humorous miniature quasi opera, his Coffee Cantata. Like today, such events were sociable occasions to enjoy musical works so fresh their ink wasn’t yet dry, or else foreign compositions sometimes arranged for the forces at hand. So savour the moment!
