The Arte Musica Foundation was created in September 2007
by Pierre Bourgie, a Montreal businessman well known for
his long-standing commitment to the cultural life of his city.
It is headed by Isolde Lagacé, who has extensive experience
in the cultural community as an arts administrator, musician
and educator.
The Foundation was established in conjunction with the con-
struction of the MMFA's new Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion
of Quebec and Canadian Art and the development of the 444-
seat Bourgie Concert Hall, in the nave of the former Erskine
and American Church, which was acquired by the Museum.
This hall, which will open in September 2011, is destined to
become a favourite venue among Montreal music lovers,
with its highly varied programming.
The Arte Musica Foundation has a mission to develop music
programming for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
Its programming focusses on three areas:
1. CONCERTS
The Foundation's primary activity is producing and presenting
concerts. In the years ahead, its role as a specialized presenter
will expand with the opening of Bourgie Hall. It will present
series of solo recitals and concerts of instrumental or vocal
chamber music from different periods in the history of music
(Renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary and
new music). Jazz and world music will also be presented, as
will premieres. Concerts may have a host or commentator and
will be scheduled at all times of day – in the morning, at noon,
in the afternoon and in the evening. They will feature profes-
sional artists from Montreal and farther afield, as well as up-
and-coming young performers.
2. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The Foundation also presents educational activities such as
music history or music appreciation courses, where participants
listen to excerpts of works; the screening of feature films or
documentaries about music; workshops to introduce young
people to music, in collaboration with professional musicians
and educators; workshops about classical or ethnological
instruments in the Museum's collection; musical audioguides
for exploring works in the Museum's permanent collection
or temporary exhibitions, providing the listener with an intro-
duction to the history of music; and any other activities for
the general public or youth to increase their understanding
and appreciation of music. These various activities are part
of the Foundation's commitment to accessibility and
audience development.
3. LINKS BETWEEN THE VISUAL ARTS AND MUSIC
Some of the Foundation's concerts and educational activities
have a connection with the visual arts. Interdisciplinary projects
will be developed to give the public a different perspective
on the Museum's collections and temporary exhibitions.
This approach is unique, original and innovative.
The Arte Musica Foundation looks forward to playing
a leading role on the Quebec music scene by developing
original projects that are accessible to all.
