GENEVIÈVE SOLY, HARPSICHORD

Harpsichord recital with commentary in French

Thursday, October 21, at 7.30 p.m.
Maxwell Cummings Auditorium

Graupner claveciniste virtuose : un portrait
Christoph Graupner was recognized by his peers as a harpsichord virtuoso. His works for harpsichord have a special place in his prodigious musical output. They are the only works he had published, at his own expense, in addition to engraving them himself. As well, they were not composed within the very strict framework of his obligations in the court of Darmstadt. They are the deepest expression of his musicality and form a touching portrait of this great, forgotten musician, of whom there is unfortunately no painting or engraving to give a face to the name.

The Great German Motet Tradition: J. S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms
With their fullness of sound and extraordinary mastery of composition, Bach’s motets mark the culmination of two centuries of Lutheran choral music. Bach’s example was followed by Mendelssohn and Brahms in the nineteenth century, who upheld the great polyphonic tradition, adapting it to the spirit of Romanticism.

Recognized as one of the country’s best vocal ensembles, SMAM comprises sixteen singers selected for the purity and clarity of their voices. It was founded thirty-six years ago by organist and harpsichordist Christopher Jackson, who continues to lead his singers with all the passion and inspiration of the early days.

Please note that the same programme is presented at each concert.
