Graphic Arts Centre

The Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts’ Graphic Arts Centre

In September 2009, the Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts unveiled its new Graphic Arts Centre, which was
made possible through a major donation from Freda
and Irwin Browns, Montreal collectors with a passion
for prints and drawings.

Thanks to their gift, the Museum was able to design
a spacious, multi-purpose gallery and ensure
the continuity of the presentation, study
and accessibility of graphic arts at the Museum.

Located on Level S2 of the Jean-Noël Desmarais
Pavilion, the Graphic Arts Centre consists of two
galleries: the Freda and Irwin Browns Gallery (81 m2)
and the adjacent Marjorie and Gerald Bronfman
Gallery (34 m2). These two spaces may be used
independently to present small-scale exhibitions
in a more intimate space or together
to present larger shows.

The Centre also provides a handsome and inviting
consultation space with a table for visiting students,
scholars and guests, by appointment, to view
specific works not currently on display.

The Montreal Museum of Fine
Arts’ collection of graphic arts

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ collection
of graphic arts is one of the most important
in Canada. It encompasses prints, drawings
and photographs surveying over five centuries
of graphic achievement and includes masterworks
by a broad diversity of artists spanning the history
of European and North American art: Schongauer,
Dürer, Marcantonio, Titian, Salviati, Callot, Claude
Lorrain, Rembrandt, Watteau, Fragonard, Hogarth,
Goya, Gericault, Delacroix, Daumier, Manet,
Picasso, Pissarro, Redon and Toulouse-Lautrec,
to name just a few. The collection also includes
French and Persian illuminated manuscripts.

And the history of Canadian art (including aboriginal)
is richly represented in works from the eighteenth
century to the contemporary period, including
a distinguished selection of graphic works by Riopelle.
The collection numbers about 10,000 prints and
drawings in all, with works evenly divided between
Canadian and non-Canadian artists.
