By François-Marc Gagnon, art historian
Please note that this series was offered in French last February.
Having spent almost fourteen years in Paris before World War II, Pellan embraced all the avant-garde movements then in full
bloom. However, it was the tour of a Picasso retrospective at the prestigious Galerie Gaston Petit that galvanized Pellan to such a degree that the vast majority of his works display the results of his dialogue with the Spanish master. Yet it is not a question of pure imitation, as Pellan is known for his inventiveness. That is why we use the word “dialogue” to describe the artist’s relationship with Picasso’s work.
