Let’s go to the Opera! – Trio Fibonacci

The trio’s strings will literally sing thanks to rare transcriptions which allow us to delight in operatic jewels of the 19th century. The bel canto (Bellini, Donizetti) will rub shoulders with Mozart – the most Italian of Germans – while Weber and Wagner will embody the pure Germanic romantic opera style. On the French side, the sensual and dreamlike atmosphere of an opera by Debussy will respond to Meyerbeer’s own form of lyricism. A unique chance to be charmed by the emotion of this repertoire whose melodies will stay with you for a long time to come.

About Face: Supermodels Then and Now

États-Unis, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 2012, 75 min, OVE
*Selected at Sundance 2012

This documentary reunites fashion’s legendary models such as Carmen Dell’Orefice, Jerry Hall, Beverly Johnson and Isabella Rossellini and examines their lives, careers and lifelong relationship with the modelling industry and the idea of beauty. From youth to cosmetic surgery, addiction to self-esteem, overnight stardom to reinvention, it reveals the extraordinary women behind the famous faces.

About Face explores beauty and aging through the stories of the original supermodels: women, now between 50 and 80 years old, whose images have defined our sense of beauty over the last half-century.

A CENTURY OF WOMEN’S MUSIC

Admired in their day by their peers but virtually unknown today, these five composers created rich and diverse works that, for the most part, remain to be discovered. Despite what the title of Elsa Barraine’s piece might have us believe, these are no quaint “lady’s handworks,” but a complex repertoire introduced to us by the Pentaèdre ensemble and young pianist Lysandre Ménard (featured in Léa Pool’s film La Passion d’Augustine).

L’épopée du parfum : une histoire des civilisations

Elisabeth de Feydeau, writer, historian and perfume expert

To tell the story of perfume is to delve into the entire history of humanity, from the early days of deity worship to modern seduction methods. Past civilizations burned fragrant materials as offerings to the gods. In fact, the word “perfume” comes from the Latin per fumum, meaning “through smoke.” Specific scents have long been used to accompany all manners of rituals, myths and religious observances. Originally considered sacred and reserved for the divine, perfume eventually became a means of promoting hygiene and fighting outbreaks of disease. But it is also, and most notably, one of the oldest weapons in the arsenal of seduction—a conveyor of passion and the very essence of romance. The story of perfume is thus the story of civilization, seen from an intimate point of view. As Paul Valéry once remarked, “there is nothing deeper than skin.” And the drop of perfume we put on this skin is a drop of immortality wrested from the gods.

Paris Couture : 1945-1968

France, Jean Lauritano, 2016, 55 min, OVF

At the end of World War II, Parisian haute couture made an extraordinary comeback. Allied soldiers stationed in Paris stocked up on provisions, and the female aristocracy, freed from restrictions, joyfully rediscovered their society rituals, draping themselves in dresses for every garden party, dance, cocktail reception and grand evening event. Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent led the crowning of Paris as the world fashion capital. Saturated with dazzling dresses, the film captures both the unparalleled radiance and the twilight of French haute couture, which, under the influence of foreign competition and the democratization of fashion, was inexorably reduced to the level of a mere ready-to-wear showcase.

Through its depiction of the great designers of the time and their eccentric clients, this archival film recalls a golden age that has disappeared forever.

Participants will be experimenting a modeling technique inspired by the theme and the Museum’s collection.

Passes are distributed from 10 a.m. on the day of the activity, at the Museum ticket counter. All materials required for the activity will be provided but the participants who wish to use their own yoga mat are welcome to bring it.

THE RESOLUTION OF LOVE

The beginning of the 20th century propelled us into modernity. The shackles of traditions were released. Artists lived in a world of heightened emotions, expressed through any means, creating new forms of artistic expression. Passion, pain, and tumult are more present here than ever, inspiring in us the resolve to love.

Presented in collaboration with the NEM.

MR. AND MRS. SCHUMANN

Clara and Robert Schumann were the Romantic period’s most iconic couple. For them, music was an expression of their deepest thoughts and emotions and of their personal love-language. Excerpts from their love letters, read by Catherine Perrin, echo the pair of tenderly romantic chamber works on this programme.

JEWISH VOICES

This carefully designed concert by the Israeli Chamber Project – an ensemble of six musicians (string quartet, clarinet, and piano) – traces the history of Jewish identity expressed through chamber music. Karl Goldmark’s European Romanticism, Aaron Copland’s quintessentially American spirit, and the unique language of Bernard Herrmann (made famous through his collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock) are heard alongside the music of prolific Israeli composer Shulamit Ran.

This program was produced with the support of the Israel Lottery Council For Culture & Arts

Art in Motion Workshop – Child’s Play

At the Museum, we firmly believe that people are never too old to learn and grow through art and culture.

Once a month, Art in Motion invites people who are 65 and over to join a relaxing moment of new discoveries.

This workshop is a chance to discover and explore close connections between works of art, physical movement and the creative act. Participants will start by taking a walk through the museum’s collections.  Next, some simple dance exercises will gently awaken our bodies to the benefits and pleasure of moving. The workshop will end with a short artistic creation that will draw awareness to the body and gestures involved in creative acts.

Art and Yoga Workshop – Sumi-e : Ink and Water Image

At the Museum, we firmly believe that people are never too old to learn and grow through art and culture.

Every month, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts invites people aged 65 and over to enjoy a day of art and yoga designed especially for them, in addition to free access to its encyclopaedic collections. Yoga helps us to get in touch with our inner selves and replenish our inner light. Combined with art, it serves the Museum’s mission to cultivate well-being.

In a convivial atmosphere, participants will occupy the Museum, taking part in a gentle yoga practice, discussing a work in the collection and enjoying this uniquely creative exploration. A stimulating experience that will open your horizons, body and soul!

Participants will be experimenting a traditionnal ink and water painting technique inspired by the theme and the Museum’s collection.

Passes are distributed from 10 a.m. on the day of the activity, at the Museum ticket counter. All materials required for the activity will be provided but the participants who wish to use their own yoga mat are welcome to bring it.

The premiere of this multidisciplinary show explores the life and work of Beethoven from a poetic and intimate perspective. Works for strings, coloured by a historically informed approach and some of the most beautiful songs for tenor are interwoven with excerpts from the composer’s correspondence
and archival images, creating a vibrant, living representation.
