Baseball legend Jackie Robinson’s short stay in Montreal is a pretext to tell the story of ordinary citizens of Little Burgundy, Montreal’s first Black community, famously known throughout North America as the Harlem of the North. When Jackie Robinson became the first Black man to join the Brooklyn Dodgers’ farm team, the Montreal Royals, in 1946, he broke the colour barrier in Major League Baseball. The impossible seemed possible in a segregated North America. But did Montrealers use this historic moment to perpetuate a myth of a post-racial society?

Shot in black and white, Dear Jackie unfolds as an intimate correspondence with Jackie Robinson, who became a prominent civil rights activist, by contrasting key milestones from his time in Montreal with the actual experience of the Black Community revealed in powerful vérité moments.
