This talk will survey the personal and creative journey of Yousuf Karsh, the young immigrant of Armenian descent who became one of the twentieth century’s leading portrait photographers. Lauded during his lifetime as “the Rembrandt of photography,” he is mostly known for his portraits.  His archives, which are kept at Library and Archives Canada and contain over 350,000 photographs,   not only extensively document the development of his work and his career, but also constitute a kind of international photographic encyclopedia of the years from the end of World War II to the 1970s.

Talk by Lisandra Cortina de la Noval, Photo Archivist, Library and Archives Canada
