Jean Paul Gaultier – 12th Stop On A World Tour!

At the opening of its exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier in Munich, Germany, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts announced that the twelfth leg of the show’s world tour would be in Seoul, South Korea. Presented in collaboration with EduChosun, a division of Chosun Media, from March 26 to June 30, 2016, the exhibition will be presented at the brand-new DDP Dongdeamun Design Plaza. To date, Jean-Paul Gaultier has been seen by close to two million visitors.

“For the twelfth leg of this phenomenal tour, this is its Asian premiere – and what a premiere it is for our aptly named exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier! After the Grand Palais in Paris and the Kunsthalle in Munich, where it is on view this fall, it will be shown in the incredible ‘space ship’ designed by Zaha Hadid: the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). This hub of creativity in historic Seoul is a temple to design in the heart of this city’s most dynamic district. From the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2011 to this major symbol of urban development in 2016, this exhibition will have been seen on four continents. What a source of pride for our city!” said Nathalie Bondil, Director and Chief Curator of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Inaugurated in 2014, this multifunctional arts complex located in a lively district near the Dongdaemun Gate was designed by architect Zaha Hadid and features several galleries, performance venues and design labs. A veritable cultural hub, the DDP will host Seoul Fashion Week in March 2016 at the same time it opens the exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier.

The first exhibition devoted to the French couturier, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier has already won over close to 2 million visitors since it opened in Montreal, where it was created in 2011. It has since been shown in Dallas, San Francisco, Madrid, Rotterdam, Stockholm, New York, London and Melbourne. The presentation at the Grand Palais in Paris, which closed on August 3, was an unqualified success with the highest attendance of any leg of the tour: 418,000 visitors. Before travelling to Seoul, the exhibition is being presented at the Kunsthalle in Munich from September 18, 2015, to February 14, 2016.

The exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier was developed, created and circulated by Nathalie Bondil, Director and Chief Curator of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition curator is Thierry-Maxime Loriot, with exhibition design by Sandra Gagné. The animation of the Jolicoeur International mannequins was designed and produced by Denis Marleau and Stéphanie Jasmin of the UBU theatre company. Air Canada is the official airline.

This is the first exhibition completely designed and developed in Montreal to be presented in one of the cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. In fact, Montreal and Seoul are both UNESCO Cities of
Design!
