About the speakers
Nathalie Richard is head of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Conservation Department. Over the past decade, she has helped conserve and restore many of the Museum’s works, particularly in the decorative arts and sculpture collections. A passionate generalist, Nathalie constantly strives to broaden her knowledge of the works under her responsibility. Her background in archaeology nourishes her keen interest in scientific research and the information concealed in the materials comprising the objects she restores.
Stephanie S. Barnes has a Master’s in Inorganic Chemistry from Laval University (2010) and a Master’s in Art Conservation (Painting) from Queen’s University (2014). After completing restoration internships at several prestigious institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Smithsonian, she joined the Canadian Conservation Institute as a conservation scientist in 2021. Her research focuses on materials used by Canadian artists and non-invasive infrared spectroscopy.
Erell Hubert is curator of pre-Columbian art at the MMFA, where she also works to enhance the collections from the Mediterranean basin, Africa and Oceania. She co-curated Connections: Our Artistic Diversity Dialogues with Our Collections (2019) and Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon (2013). Holder of a Ph.D. in Andean archaeology from the University of Cambridge (2015), she pursues field research in Peru, exploring notions of materiality, object biography and ethics of provenance.
A multi-award-winning journalist, Valérie Borde co-founded Centre Déclic, a non-profit organization that organizes conferences bringing together scientists and the public, in an approach that is unique in Quebec. She is currently the organization’s co-director. An engineer who graduated from the École nationale supérieure de chimie de Paris and holds an advanced degree (DEA) in scientific information and communication from Université Paris VII, she has lived in Quebec City since 1993.
