MMFA Foundation announces transformational gift to shape future of permanent collection

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) Foundation is delighted to announce a transformational $5 million gift that will enhance the permanent collection, improve the public's access to and understanding of the collection's exceptional cultural and historical value, and support the Museum’s core priorities.

The MMFA’s permanent collection, comprising some 47,000 works of art spanning a vast array of cultures, styles and periods, is a true cultural gem that has helped cement Montreal's reputation on the world stage. This gift from the Weston family will support the presentation and enhancement of artworks and thematic exhibitions, in addition to educational programs inspired by the collection. In recognition of this generous contribution, the Weston family have been named as the Major Patron of the MMFA’s collection.

“We are deeply touched by the generosity of the Weston family, whose exceptional support contributes to the enhancement of the MMFA’s permanent collection, an invaluable treasure and essential part of our national heritage,” said Jo-Anne Duchesne, Director General of the MMFA Foundation. “This collection is the cornerstone of the Museum’s activities, and this major gift will allow our team to implement even more dynamic and inspiring initiatives for the benefit of our increasingly broad public.”

The MMFA’s permanent collection houses works of art from around the world, spanning every era, from antiquity to the present. Spread across five pavilions, this rich collection showcases Quebec and Canadian art, Inuit art, ancient and modern international art, the Arts of One World, contemporary art and the MMFA’s collection of decorative arts and design, one of the largest in North America.

The MMFA Foundation's major fundraising campaign, The Museum Transforms Lives (2023-2028), is raising funds to enhance its artistic programming and promote its collection; maintain its commitment to the community; and achieve its mission through the implementation of special projects.
