Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion – Level 1

Displayed in brightly lit modernized galleries that double the Museum’s exhibition space dedicated to Inuit art, the presentation brings together an extensive variety of works – prints, drawings, photographs, paintings, sculptures and installations – some of which are recent acquisitions. With ᐆᒻᒪᖁᑎᒃ uummaqutik, the MMFA wishes to make Inuit artistic and cultural heritage more accessible to all audiences.

ᐆᒻᒪᖁᑎᒃ uummaqutik was conceived in collaboration with Inuk artist and curator asinnajaq, and invites us to meditate on the rhythms of life that are particular to the circumpolar territories known together as Inuit Nunangat.

Be sure to have your smartphone and earphones with you on your next visit to the Museum, so you can enjoy a unique sensory experience. Featuring excerpts in Inuktitut and accounts given by the curator and various artists, the audio tour offers detailed and evocative visual descriptions of a dozen fascinating works on display. Tune out and tune in to this contemplative moment.

Tactile tools allowing for manipulation and exploration through touch are also available to further enrich your multisensory engagement with the collection. They include objects such as a caribou antler, a soapstone block, seal skin and a spongy cetacean bone. There is also a tactile floor plan for visually impaired visitors.
