Locked up in an asylum after attempting suicide, the elderly musician Antonio Salieri confesses to a priest that he is Mozart's murderer and recounts the circumstances of his crime. While he was the official composer at the Austrian court, he was struck by the musical genius of the young Mozart, but shocked by his vulgar manners.

Austere and diligent himself, he had deemed it unfair of God to grant such great inspiration to such a coarse man. He had then set about undermining Mozart's career while pretending to be his friend, reducing him to poverty.
