SYNOPSIS

College student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) returns home after his father has a stroke. When he discovers a severed ear in an abandoned field, Beaumont teams up with detective's daughter Sandy Williams (Laura Dern) to solve the mystery.

They believe beautiful lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) may be connected with the case, and Beaumont finds himself becoming drawn into her dark, twisted world, where he encounters sexually depraved psychopath Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).

Programmer’s note

The master of American surrealist cinema, David Lynch, closes out the series with a 40th-anniversary screening of Blue Velvet. A precursor to Twin Peaks, the film’s constantly shifting tone walks the line between dream and nightmare, revealing the darkness lurking beneath suburban life.

As part of the Surrealist Saturdays Series
Following the popularity of last year’s series exploring surrealism in cinema, presented as part of the exhibition Worlds of Wonder: The Surrealist Journey of Alan Glass at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Cinéma du Musée presents a continuation of the series from February 21 to July 7.

This selection of 10 feature films explores the porous boundaries between conscious and unconscious, where time folds in on itself and everyday objects take on an unsettling life.
