Anique Jordan: Underbelly
Free for Members

The MMFA is delighted to pursue its long-standing collaboration with MOMENTA biennale d’art contemporain in presenting the work of multidisciplinary Canadian artist, writer and curator Anique Jordan.

In the exhibition Underbelly, Jordan explores history as a material shaped by visible and invisible presences. Drawing on Trinidadian carnival and the theory of hauntology, a concept popularized by French philosopher Jacques Derrida, she questions dominant narratives by highlighting the lingering “ghosts” of past ideologies and injustices that continue to inform the world today.

She reimagines history as a fluid structure, weaving fictional elements into archival fragments that serve as springboards for a speculative and unprecedented vision of the future. Between shadow and light, Jordan invites reflection on memory and the visibility of Black bodies within both colonial and contemporary space.

About the artist

Anique Jordan is a Canadian artist, curator and writer who works in photography, sculpture and performance. In her practice, she forms a dialogue with her Trinidadian culture and presents a non-linear reading of history in which the past, present and future meet.
