Katsushika Hokusai depicts two men washing a horse at Yoshino, a scene Edo viewers would instantly have recognized as a nod to Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189), the tragic rebel samurai who once stopped during a campaign to wash his steed at a waterfall. Rather than simply portray the famed warrior, Hokusai instead chose to include two humble figures, skilfully injecting legend into a modest, everyday moment, which would have resonated deeply with his broad-based audience.
