Frosted Necklace

Joyce J. Scott is known for her expertly crafted and politically charged sculptural jewellery. She favours the peyote stitch, an Indigenous bead-weaving method facilitating flat and three-dimensional patterns. She learned the process from the Muscogee (Creek) artist Sandy Fife Wilson in the 1970s. The title, Frosted, is slang for decked out in jewellery, or being high or angry, and it also refers to hair highlights. The beaded face alludes to the complex hierarchies of colourism among African Americans, an important topic for the artist.
