In this vibrant flower painting, Maria van Oosterwyck demonstrates her knowledge of the various specimens, depicting them from multiple viewpoints. Insects, including a fluttering white butterfly and a dangling
spider, breathe even more life into the painting. Although excluded from the Dutch painter’s guild on the basis of her gender, Van Oosterwyck secured important international commissions and is said to have trained at least one other woman artist, Geertgen Wyntges.
