Whether he was in Paris or Brittany, or on one or the other of the Channel coastlines, in the South of France, on the Côte d’Azur or the Côte Basque, in Spain, Tunisia or the West Indies, Lyman was sensitive to the local culture. Here, the models’ dignity and reserve contrasts with the more sensual and provocative poses of numerous nudes depicting white women.
