This work is a sculpture at rest, first activated for performance at The One Who Keeps on Giving exhibition at the Power Plant, Toronto, during which Maria Hupfield and her siblings made responses to a seascape painted by their late mother. The circle, spiral, felt and jingles reiterate water as a powerful symbol in Anishinaabek culture. Jingles move distinctly with each wearer, and equally allude to the ripples on the surface of the Great Lakes before the fabulous panther, a powerful underwater being whose name we do not speak, appears. This work addresses intersections between cultural knowledge, materiality, the body, movement and orality.
