Studies in biology and forestry shaped Lorraine Gilbert’s vision of the land, but it was her experience as a tree planter in British Columbia that instigated her artistic practice and social activism: “Within the flow of thought, I always remained aware of the forest that once stood on the land surrounding me. Working in the clear-cut, to the treeline and back, again and again, I was constantly time travelling, crossing the threshold between worlds, visiting the once-living forest, now decimated by the logging companies, and I couldn’t help but think about the heartless destruction of the environment in the name of monetary profit.”
