Guru Nanak sits on a carpet, his back against a cushion. With him are Bala, who holds a chauri (fly-flapper), and Mardana, who plays the sarod. Nanak holds a book in his left hand, which serves as a likely allusion to his writings in the Adi Granth, probably the Japji Sahib, his first composition, which opens the Granth.
