Adrien Hébert added a quintessentially modern theme to the expanding repertoire of subject matter: harbour machinery, whose functionalist aesthetic he admired. Montreal Harbour is impressive in the structure it creates through a dynamic interplay of verticals and diagonals in the form of derricks, the painted smokestacks and hulls of docked ships, conveyors, a grain elevator and a silo wall.
