Quebec and Canadian Art

To celebrate his horse’s victory in an important race, the prosperous timber merchant, constructor and ship owner Allan Gilmour commissioned Robert Clow Todd to paint Corbeau at Montmorency Falls. The artist depicted the triumphant Corbeau trailing a sled and being admired within a quintessentially Quebec winter scene set at the well-known Montmorency Falls, near Quebec City. The location popular with locals for recreational activities all year round was the backdrop for similar works made by the artist for proud carriage owners, a testament to this historical painting’s renown in Quebec.
