A Large Rhododendron Open Bowl

Ceramic artist Hitomi Hosono here adopted the timeless and universal bowl form, covering it with hundreds of rhododendron tendrils, leaves and flowers. The astonishing vessel seems shaped at once by nature and by human hands in a delicate balance between the organic and the manufactured. Hosono made plaster moulds for the floral castings that she then applied to the bowl by hand, employing the traditional technique of sprigging, which she learned during her residency at Wedgwood. Each vessel takes months to dry before kiln firing.
