A lively group of bourgeoisie gathers to make beignets, a traditional holiday treat celebrating Mardi Gras and Holy Week. This portrayal of the joyful scene also offers a social critique of ribald behaviour. Notice, for instance, the man by the bed flirtatiously admiring the woman before the mirror. More direct even, a man at the fireplace reaches into a woman’s décolletage. In illustrating these indecorous acts committed during a religious holiday, the artist derides the moral posturing of the upper class.
