The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Conseil des arts de Montréal are pleased to announce the laureate of this year’s Impressions Residency: Jinjoo Yang. This eight-week artist residency opens the door to a visual artist from one of Montreal’s cultural communities to carry out a research-creation project by bringing a unique and original perspective to one of the Museum’s collections. Thanks to the financial support of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, Yang will receive a $7,000 bursary.
Jinjoo Yang is a Korean artist and architect who lives and works in Montreal. She studied painting at Seoul National University, in South Korea, and architecture at Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, in New York. Yang principally creates in situ audiovisual installations inspired by the spaces they inhabit. Her work has been exhibited in Australia, South Korea and Denmark.
Aiming to transform our perception of a space, the artist first studies the site and then alters it by means of sound. She is particularly interested in the emotional charge of architectural settings and their physical characteristics.
As part of her residency, Yang will create a four-channel audiovisual installation, titled Coming Home. She will draw inspiration from works in the Museum’s reserves collection and associate them with particular sound characteristics. The artist will be focusing specifically on works whose provenance has been lost due to war, and she will examine the question of their presence in the collection despite their unknown origins.
“The Impressions Residency, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, gives us a spectacular window onto the work of diverse artists who are enriching Montreal’s artistic landscape. Through her unique contribution, her approach and her undeniable talent in visual art, Jinjoo Yang exemplifies this richness. We extend to her our heartiest congratulations and our wishes for a productive residency – we’re very excited to see the results,” says Nathalie Maillé, Executive Director of the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
“Since its establishment in 2013, the Impressions Residency has provided a springboard for a number of emerging Montreal artists from diverse cultural backgrounds: Karen Tam, Naghmeh Sharifi, Pansee Atta, Ari Bayuaji, Jobena Petonoquot, Leila Zelli, Nayla Dabaji, Ahreum Lee and Anahita Norouzi. This year, we’re thrilled to welcome artist Jinjoo Yang. Her unique practice combining philosophy and aesthetics, sound and space, made her the unanimous choice of the jury. We are eager to support her talent,” adds Mary-Dailey Desmarais, Chief Curator of the MMFA.
