The MMFA Pays Tribute to Mr. Stephen A. Jarislowsky

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Mr. Stephen A. Jarislowsky, C.C., G.O.Q., at the age of 101.

A renowned philanthropist and longtime friend of the Museum, Mr. Jarislowsky leaves an indelible mark on Montreal and on our institution. Involved in numerous causes, from art to education, this visionary financier made possible the creation of more than 50 chairs through the Jarislowsky Foundation. He received honorary degrees from 20 Canadian universities and was named Companion of the Order of Canada and Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec. His remarkable legacy also includes founding the investment management firm Jarislowsky Fraser Limited.

At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, he leaves a lasting legacy, notably through the MMFA’s Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair. The very first endowed chair ever established in a Quebec museum, it provides essential support for Canadian contemporary art. It funds in perpetuity the position of Curator of Quebec and Canadian Contemporary Art (1945 to Today), while also supporting activities related to this body of work, from research to education. Established in 2016 through a major gift, it is also the first chair created by the Jarislowsky Foundation in a museum. In addition to his many philanthropic contributions to the institution, Mr. Jarislowsky served on its Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1986.

We extend our most sincere condolences to Mr. Jarislowsky’s loved ones, and we thank him wholeheartedly for his immense contribution to the MMFA.
