Inspired by Lake Temagami, in northern Ontario, this painting dates from the summer of 1929. Milne had then returned to Canada after ten years in the Adirondack region of New York. He wrote of Dark Pool, “This line and this scratchy sparse laying-on of colour comes in part from a feeling that I am often aware of, a desire to set things down with as little expenditure of aesthetic means as possible, just to touch the canvas or paper, even just to wish on them without any material agent if that were possible!”
