While training in Europe from 1843 to 1846, Hamel had the chance to practise direct copying, which gave him a better understanding of the style and characteristics of some artists who had left their mark on art history. Among the studies he returned with were this Education of the Virgin after Rubens and a Martyrdom of Saint Peter of Verona after Titian–two leading colourists.
