La Linea

La Linea

Creation: Osvaldo Cavandoli

Italy, 1971 to 1986, animation, Multiple episodes, approximately 3 minutes each

Mr. Linea’s special language is a mixture of gibberish, onomatopoeia and sound effects.

This series features a character, drawn as a simple white outline on a plain coloured background, who is grumpy, indignant, even rude yet still endearing. He moves along a horizontal line that can end at the artist’s whim. The cartoonist, occasionally seen as a hand holding a pencil, creates the universe of this basic everyman hero sometimes called Balou or Mr. Linea, depending on the country. When he’s faced with a problem, Mr. Linea calls on the artist who draws new elements as needed.
