Lesson #5 - Screenwriting and narrative structure

To conclude the series, RASHOMON explores one of cinema’s most fascinating questions: who gets to tell the story? Through Kurosawa’s innovative narrative structure and the idea of the “Rashomon effect,” this session examines how perspective, storytelling, and the other formal elements of cinema work together to shape meaning.

Synopsis

In 11th-century Japan, a samurai is found dead. Four conflicting accounts are given by a woodcutter, a bandit, the samurai’s wife, and the samurai’s spirit, summoned by a medium. Each tells a different version of the crime—but is anyone telling the truth?

Cinéma du Musée is proud to announce the launch of FILM 101, a new series dedicated to film appreciation and education.

Designed for aspiring cinephiles, lifelong students, and lovers of classic cinema, FILM 101 presents five films that explore the language of the seventh art.

Throughout the series, participants will discover fundamental elements of cinematic language and develop the tools needed to better observe, analyze, and discuss the art of filmmaking. Each screening will be accompanied by a short introduction to provide context on the subject, followed by an informal discussion to deepen the analysis and connect with fellow film lovers.
