Artists in France traditionally followed a system where-by only officially sanctioned work was exhibited at the Salon. Young artists who chose to experiment, who rejected accepted styles, found themselves largely excluded. By the mid-nineteenth century however, painters became increasingly vocal about their rejection, opting instead to exhibit outside this system.
