About the lecture
Exploring aesthetics and media through borrowings from the world of the circus, the wax sculptures of Madame Tussauds and the history of European ceramics, Shary Boyle’s works invite fascinating considerations about current societal issues, like the political anxiety related to the various crises we are experiencing, or the role social media plays as a stage for performances of the self. This encounter with the artist will provide an ideal opportunity to become acquainted with her world and better understand what spurs her creative work.
About the speaker
Born in 1972, Shary Boyle works across diverse media, including sculpture, painting, installation and drawing. She is known for her bold, highly crafted and deeply imaginative explorations of the figure. Boyle thrives on collaboration and mentorship. In her practice, she considers the social history of ceramic figurines, animist mythologies and folk art forms to create a symbolic, feminist and politically charged language that is uniquely her own. Shary Boyle’s work is exhibited and collected internationally, and she represented Canada at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.
