Lesson #1 - Mise-en-scène

One of cinema’s most celebrated films, CITIZEN KANE is a masterclass in how visual choices create meaning. Through an analysis of mise-en-scène, including composition, performance, lighting, and costume, this screening examines the relationship between form and content, while exploring how cinema connects to other visual arts.

Synopsis

Charles Foster Kane has just died in his castle. Although he was very popular during his lifetime, the public knew little more than the public side of his life. That is why no one is able to explain his last words: “Rosebud.” A reporter sets out to unravel this mystery by interviewing all those who knew Kane well. And, along with them, we gradually discover the true nature of this man’s personality.

Cinéma du Musée is proud to announce the launch of FILM 101, a new series dedicated to film appreciation and education.

Designed for aspiring cinephiles, lifelong students, and lovers of classic cinema, FILM 101 presents five films that explore the language of the seventh art.

Throughout the series, participants will discover fundamental elements of cinematic language and develop the tools needed to better observe, analyze, and discuss the art of filmmaking. Each screening will be accompanied by a short introduction to provide context on the subject, followed by an informal discussion to deepen the analysis and connect with fellow film lovers.
