Alinka Echeverría: Simulacra

An exhibition presented by MOMENTA | Biennale de l'image in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

From September 5, 2019 to December 1, 2019

MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image presents, in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), Alinka Echeverría: Simulacra. Making its premiere in Quebec, this exhibition features two installations by the Mexican-British artist Alinka Echeverría that take a critical look at issues related to the representation of women in the field of photography.

An artist and social anthropologist, Echeverría explores the philosophical, psychological and sociocultural relationships between image and belief by questioning society’s representational codes. In Simulacra, the artist revisits her project Nicephora, which she developed as part of her BMW research residency at the musée Nicéphore Niépce (France) in 2015.

Drawing on the French museum’s archived colonial photographs, Fieldnotes for Nicephora reframes the white male legacy of the pioneer of photography Nicéphore Niépce (1765-1833) from a feminist perspective. Composed of images of women, this corpus explores the male colonialist gazes that shaped history and reveals the illusion and fantasy conveyed by the images.

The series “Precession of the Feminine – 10 Simulacra” presents three-dimensional simulations of vases with images of women enlarged to the point of being indiscernible. Printed on glass plates, the references to the body are more readily perceptible instead in the shape of the vases. In these works, Echeverría analyzes the relationship between ceramics and photography, two utilitarian practices that have become cultural vehicles.
